Chalk Talk: What Do Kids Read in School?
These days, there is a major push to include a variety of authentic literature in classrooms. This is different than in the past when students often read material written solely for the classroom. Now, most reading and literature classes use materials written for general audiences. For example, instead of reading from a text book, teachers will pass out magazines or newspapers. This style of teaching leads to real world experiences and extends learning beyond the classroom.
