Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Laurel District Curriculum

This achievement of the curricular goals begin in the early years of education as children build a Language Arts foundation by learning how to blend sounds to create words, then use this skill to help them complete daily journals. The early learners continue on to learn about the parts of speech and reading comprehension through short stories and novels. By the time they finish high school, students can take a work like Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and find the elements of tragedy, the plot structure, and dramatic techniques.

In Math, the learning starts with how to count and recognize numerical words and two-dimensional figures. Continuing on with their education, the students learn to group numbers by tens and ones. Students can stretch beyond recognizing figures as they learn how to find the areas and perimeters of a shape, as well as the circumference of a circle. With this base, students can demonstrate confidence when using their knowledge of geometry, algebra, or calculus.

Chalk Talk: Developing Literacy Skills

Skills needed to help children succeed, educationally, are language and literacy skills. These skills can be built from the time the child is an infant by trying a few different things. Interacting with a baby or child builds language skills from the start, even singing little nursery rhymes gives them a sense of the language. Then, reading to the child at bedtime demonstrates a love of reading while presenting even more language skills. Even while traveling, by asking what a sign says or taking a visit to a library will grow the skills of exploration.
