Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Macomb District Curriculum
In order to demonstrate the value of integrity, honesty, and respect for the ideas presented in the learning process as well as the environment in which they are presented, the students are free to learn in an environment that nurtures the individual. Students are given many opportunities to perform community service, so that students give back and learning skills which will last them a lifetime.
The curriculum focuses on real-world applications of lessons so that students are prepared as competitive members of the growing, global community. Teachers focus on analytical writing and critical reading skills in humanities classes because these skills translate across the board to any discipline. It also focuses on writing that uses a process to develop a well-founded point or thesis. The hope is that students will be well-prepared for post-secondary education and/or the working world when they graduate, regardless of any differences in learning style.

Chalk Talk: Public vs. Private Colleges
There are many basic differences between public and private colleges, but most of them are, at heart, superficial. The primary difference is in the way they’re funded. Public colleges are funded by the state. Because of this, their tuitions are usually lower than private colleges, and they are required to accept a certain percentage of in-state residents. But, keep in mind that with scholarships, many private colleges can be just as inexpensive to a competitive students. Public colleges are also overseen by the state, so they must conform to certain mandates, whereas private colleges are more focused on “the customer.” Private colleges tend to be smaller and more expensive. They also tend to be more hands-on. Public colleges may also be small, and therefore offer many of the benefits of private colleges but without the expense.
