Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mahtomedi District Curriculum
The English language arts curriculum integrates the teaching of reading, writing, conducting research, and speaking, The fundamentals of literacy are covered in elementary school so that by middle school students begin to learn about literary devices and how to analyze the story they are reading. They also write essays that require strong supporting evidence, and as they progress expects that they will develop a voice of their own. In high school, there is a strong emphasis on conducting research so that students are prepared to meet that critical expectation at college.
High school students participate in a health curriculum that focuses on preparedness for emergency situations, community collaboration, and personal awareness. Students work together to create first aid kits and first responder information for community organizations. Learners also analyze local emergencies and posit ideas for how the response to the emergency could be improved. Classes work together to brainstorm risks in the local community as well as ideas for reducing those risks. Injury prevention is a central topic of discussion as well. Students identify activities in which they participate and the injuries that could result from those activities.

Chalk Talk: Considering a Gap Year
Many students dive right into a job, career training, college, or the military upon their graduation from high school. However, there is something to be said for considering a “gap year” after high school. The gap year is a staple of education in other western countries, namely the United Kingdom and Australia, but it’s only just begun to find support in the U.S. The idea of the gap year is to give students much-needed down time before beginning the next stage of their life. After attending school from kindergarten to the twelfth grade, students could usually stand some time away from schooling. But that doesn’t mean that a gap year is a yearlong summer break. Instead, students can use the time to travel and see the world, learn about their surroundings, and experience cultures unlike their own, or take that time to do an internship to get valuable on-the-job training.
