Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Maple Valley District Curriculum
The elementary math curriculum in Maple Valley focuses on math fluency. Students are expected to know addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts by the time they leave elementary school. Each grade level has a set of requirements that must be completed in order that students achieve proficiency. The math curriculum uses games, learning challenges, and an assortment of strategies to help build math fluency.
In high school, students are asked to apply the fundamental English, math and science skills acquired in the elementary grades. In order to earn a diploma from the district, students must take four years of English, three years of math and two years of science. Freshman and Sophomore Composition, Algebra 1 and Geometry and Biology are required, the remaining core subject graduation requirements are met through upper division elective courses. In addition to the credit requirements, students must take and pass the end of course Biology exam and the Washington State High School Proficiency Exam.

SchoolTutoring has played an important role in improving our son’s confidence and attitude towards school. His grades have also improved steadily throughout the school year.
My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!
We are so happy with the results of your tutoring program and academic support. Homework time was such a stressful evening for the entire evening before we brought your tutors into our home. Thank you for all your help!
Our daughter, a first grader, struggled with basic reading and handwriting. When she began with SchoolTutoring she was almost a year behind her class. Within a year of being enrolled, she is reading above her grade level and has the confidence to match.
Keeping Informed: Recent Maple Valley Educational News
- Classroom 10 - Maple Valley Schools believe that students must be 21st century learners in order to compete, and be successful, in the changing world. In order to assist students in this goal, the district has implemented the Classroom 10 program. This program consists of four focus areas: Accountability, Learning Organization, Professional Development and 21st Century Learning. Each of the four categories has clearly defined goals and visions to assist educators in creating the best possible learning environment.
- Early Entrance - The district has set forth a board policy that allows children to enter school prior to the age designated by the state. Parents are able to request early entrance to kindergarten for their student, and have them tested to show advanced academic ability. The testing is done through an independent testing contractor, which allows it to be objective. Parents are provided with a report of their child's testing outcome regardless of whether or not the child was admitted early entrance.
- Extended Enrichment - Newly opened, extended enrichment is available to all K-5 students in the district. This program gives the students a structured, enrichment environment to go after school until 6pm every night. Educational and recreational activities are offered to all students.
