Educating Our Parents: Understanding the McMinnville District Curriculum

While studying science, at Warren County School District, students look at the larger picture early in their education. For example, they may look at the human body as basic parts, such as arms, legs and head. As they progress in school they focus in on more specifics. By the time they graduate, they will have broken down each area into very specific parts, such as the tissue, nervous system, various cells and the brain. By gradually progressing this way, the students learn how to break a problem down into easier to understand steps.

The English curriculum helps students acquire reading, writing, and communication skills that they will use in all courses as well as throughout their lives. Critical and analytic skills are emphasized and students discuss their reading in small groups or the whole class to explore the different interpretations people have of the texts they read. Students also learn how to write for a variety of different purposes, develop their voice, and use proper written conventions. They also learn skills that will support their research and presentation abilities.

Chalk Talk: Parental Involvement

Although it is important for a student to have a well-prepared, knowledgeable and dedicated teacher, it is even more important for that student to have parents that are engaged. The home environment needs to be conducive to learning. Giving your child a specified time each night to study and do homework facilitates learning. If they are reading, find a book to read, if they are doing math, take that time to work on the checkbook. When having a family discussion, encourage the child to listen and share their thoughts. Lastly, communicate with the child about their day, not only about the homework, which is important, but about all parts of the day. This builds a trusting relationship that a child can turn to if they do encounter problems at school.
