Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Medford District Curriculum
The Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Language Arts and Literacy relies on the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects. The standards are implemented through a variety of curricula and teaching methods designed to teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening, the core areas of Language Arts instruction in an integrated manner.
The reading standards for students in high school require them to be able to identify and cite evidence to support the text’s main ideas and to explain how writers organize and present their arguments. They should be able to work out the meaning of new vocabulary based on contextual clues and to explain how the writer’s choice of words shapes the meaning of the text. They should be able to identify the specific sentences or phrases that reveal the main ideas of a text and to explain the point of view these ideas express.

Chalk Talk: Thinking Critically: Recognizing Assumptions
How many times have you realized that something you believed to be true was not really true at all? Often, we are not even aware about the basis for our beliefs. This unconscious belief is called an assumption. Assumptions are beliefs we accept without examining or even being aware of them. They are ideas we accept unconsciously, and sometimes they are ideas that are untrue or that we don’t accept. And yet because they go “beneath the radar” they exert a powerful influence on our thinking. When we assume, without realizing it, that something is not possible, we never explore how to accomplish it.
