Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Metuchen District Curriculum
The district’s curriculum is based on the guidelines of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. These research-based documents provide rich learning experiences is the following nine subjects: social studies, technology, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, world languages, science, math and language arts.
The 21st Century life and careers curriculum includes a strand on career awareness, exploration and preparation. Coursework in this strand focuses student learning on the world of work and the knowledge and skills that are required in today’s workforce. Students engage in an examination of many career areas and identify careers that interest them or suit their individual aptitudes. Students identify key skills and knowledge required for their career interest area, and discuss the characteristics of the job with adult mentors. Students also learn about any specialized training the job requires. Finally, students identify the ways in which their academic performance and behavior can positively or negatively impact their employability.

Chalk Talk: How Technology Is Used in Education
Today’s classrooms, with wireless internet, Smart Boards, document cameras and tablets, are a far cry from what typical classrooms looked like just ten years ago. Though some resisted the integration of technology into classrooms, the real value of doing so is becoming evident. Technology allows teachers and students to expand the learning space. Rather than reading in a textbook and looking at photos of ruins of the Roman Empire, students can now take self-guided online tours that explain each building in detail. These interactive activities deepen students’ depth of understanding, both because the resources available are immense, and because they can be accessed at school and at home.
