Mission Viejo District and Curriculum
The curriculum used in the schools of Mission Viejo provides a standards-based approach to teaching and learning. The curriculum describes the major areas of learning within a subject and then enumerates the skills and knowledge that students are expected to become proficient in. In Math, the curriculum describes the skills of numerical operations, geometry and measurement, algebra, and statistics and probability that students will develop each year. The Science curriculum similarly covers earth and life sciences, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and technology subjects.
In Language Arts, learning is organized around the reading of fiction and non-fiction, writing for a range of purposes, speaking, and listening skills. By organizing the subjects so that student learning progresses over the years higher order thinking skills like reasoning, problem-solving, analysis and critical thinking are created.

- Trabuco Fields Program - The district collaborates with Trabuco Fields in a science-social studies interdisciplinary learning experience. Students in grades k-6 are able to visit the historic mining fields and learn about the mining and social history of this location.
- Immersion Programs - One major trend in education is to provide students with the chance to learn in two languages. The elementary schools in Saddleback Valley are creating programs that offer this experience to any student. This choice program offers half of the student's instruction in English and half in Spanish. Through the program students become bilingual and biliterate.
- Kid's Factory - The local area Kid's Factory offers students a chance for recreational activities and learning experiences in an atmosphere designed to promote fun. There are programs in the arts, athletics, games and many more offerings developed regularly.
