Students in their junior and senior years of high school work with and analyze literary texts to determine key ideas and details.

In the arts curriculum, students examine various styles of theatre, comparing and contrasting each, and learning the essential features of dramatic, tragic and comedic performances. Chalk Talk: How Social Media Can Help Children Learn

As much time as kids spend on social media these days, it is important to teach them how they can harness its power to learn something about the world around them. In many schools, teachers are utilizing Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to connect their students with the world. YouTube can bring learning to life by allowing kids to watch a science experiment or view a presentation by a Harvard professor. Facebook can be used to help kids gather information about current events in the world. When researching a project, students can utilize Twitter to ask experts questions. For artistic purposes, Instagram provides a wealth of opportunities for kids to share their creativity with other creative-minded people. Teachers can utilize any of these platforms to engage kids in learning as well. For example, teachers can utilize hashtags on Twitter or Instagram to elicit student participation in an out-of-class online discussion. Although social media presents some dangers for kids, utilizing it in a responsible and safe manner allows for a greatly expanded learning community.
