Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Monroe District Curriculum
Students in Monroe engage in a study and use of technology across their entire academic curriculum. Students learn how to use the Internet, computers, and other technologies to access and evaluate information. Children also acquire an understanding of responsible use of technology. This includes learning about digital citizenship and identifying ways in which technology can be used in both a helpful or hurtful manner. Students learn to manipulate technology to create and publish information as well.
The Monroe science curriculum begins in elementary school where students gain the foundational knowledge they need for future scientific studies. Students learn how to observe the world around them and note characteristics and properties of weather patterns, natural and man-made objects, and animals. Children learn basic classification systems, such that they can organize objects into specific categories such as plant or animal. Students investigate the atmosphere as well, learning that water is a large component of clouds, fog, snow, and rain.

Chalk Talk: Social Studies Provides Perspective
An integral part of education, social studies courses provide students with many valuable skills and benefits that will last a lifetime. Students in history learn how to critically analyze documents, which helps them assess meaning and intent. Students in geography learn how to read maps and develop improved spatial skills. In government, students learn valuable civics skills, including the need for participation in government through voting and supporting events and organizations that improve the community in which they live. All of these skills last a lifetime and promote an improved society. Additionally, social studies offers students perspective with regard to how our nation has developed and where we are headed in the future. By studying other peoples, cultures, and religions, students also gain an appreciation for diversity and respect for those unlike themselves.
