The mission of the Montclair Public Schools is to instill in students a desire for life-long learning and stimulate their academic interests with engaging and challenging curricula. The Montclair Public Schools approach education with the belief that each student can meet or exceed the standards set forth in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Montclair District Curriculum

The Common Core Standards provide guidance for student achievement in math and language arts. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards outline what students should learn at each grade level in the following seven core areas: science, social studies, technology, world languages, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, and 21st Century life and careers.

Although elementary and middle school students attend schools based on the magnet program offered there, students across the district receive a well-rounded education in all core subjects, including mathematics. In elementary school, students build the foundation for understanding mathematics. Early on, student learning is focused on learning numerals and counting to 100 by ones and tens. In higher elementary grades, students learn about fractions and notations. More advanced studies await students in middle school, where they learn about proportional relationships, such as how to calculate gratuities.

Integrating technology into classrooms gives students more tools with which to learn, while giving them an opportunity to utilize technology to meet their needs. Schools across the country issue iPads or laptops to students, ensuring that each child has the technological tools they need to be successful. Having access to these technologies to further their educations means that students will be prepared for the technologically-advanced 21st Century workforce.
