Chalk Talk: Why Gifted Education Programs Are Essential

Children that have above average creative or academic abilities can find themselves without many inroads to more challenging and creative means by which to explore their interests. Gifted children who are not challenged in class may end up bored, acting out, or not invested in their education. This is an ongoing issue and has been for some years. In fact, research shows that as many as one-quarter of students identified as intellectually gifted drop out of school. The majority of kids that choose to drop out cite that they are not inspired or interested in school. As a result, gifted and talented programming takes on added importance. These programs help keep students engaged in their learning by offering them a chance to explore topics that are aligned to their abilities. Some schools offer accelerated coursework so students can skip a grade. Other schools offer intensive gifted programs in specific topics, such as the sciences or humanities. By offering these alternative learning programs, districts are better able to meet the unique needs of gifted students.
