Nephi District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Juab School District adheres to Utah Core Standards which define the learning expectations students should meet at each grade level in the core subjects. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nephi District Curriculum

The English Language Arts curriculum is responsible for reading, writing, speaking and listening, researching, and media viewing. These are taught in an integrated fashion so that reading informs writing and discussion, or research informs writing and presenting. Reading comprehension is worked on yearly with students focusing on all types of text from literary to non-fiction. Likewise, with writing, students are expected to write for personal reflection as well as informational or persuasive purposes.

The Math curriculum focuses on numeracy, operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability and in high school students can take courses such as trigonometry or pre-calculus. During the early years, students are introduced to many concepts from basic operations to pattern awareness or shape recognition. These build the skills necessary for algebra and geometry, and the idea is that students will have the needed range of problem-solving skills when faced with the more advanced topics like statistics.

Chalk Talk: What Is STEM Education?

A recent trend in education has been the focus on STEM learning - the combination of science, technology, engineering, and math - in an integrated fashion. courses draw on all four areas and offer students many project-based learning opportunities. There are a couple drives behind this effort. First, the technology-driven economy requires that the next generation be proficient in these areas and prepared for the types of jobs which will exist. Second, teaching content in an integrated fashion can be highly effective and for students interested in these areas, the learning will be more impactful in any of the areas when done together. Of course, the goal of having programs that interest students is also paramount, and STEM programs have proven successful in that category.
