Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Neptune Township District Curriculum

The district’s curricula meet or exceed the standards outlined in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The former dictates what knowledge and skills students should learn and be able to do in math and language arts. The latter document provides guidance for student learning in seven core content areas: visual and performing arts, technology, world languages, 21st Century life and careers, social studies, science, and health and physical education

The physical health of students is an integral component of their intellectual, social and emotional growth. Elementary age students learn what it means to maintain cleanliness by properly washing hands and when hand washing is needed, such as after using the restroom. Students in middle school gain a better understanding of the physical, emotional and social changes they go through during adolescence. Once in high school, students learn the importance of community and how they can positively contribute to others through community service.

Chalk Talk: How Music Facilitates Learning

Having music playing while kids work in the classroom or on homework at home actually helps students learn. Soft background music helps keep students engaged in their learning by keeping their energy level up. Music is especially helpful when kids work immediately following lunch or dinner, when full stomachs make them particularly sleepy. Teachers can use music as a teaching tool, with many songs available to help kids learn vocabulary words, math concepts or social studies subjects. Music fosters creative expression and appreciation for the arts as well. When the music is carefully selected and age-appropriate, it can prove to be a valuable asset for enhancing the learning environment at school and at home.
