Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New London District Curriculum
Teachers are expected to set high standards by using higher leveling questions and problem solving challenges. The foundations of numeracy or life science build towards a deeper analytic understanding of the subject. In Math, topics such as algebra, geometry and statistical data analysis are unfolded over the years so students develop greater understanding and increase their ability to take on more complex learning challenges.
In elementary school, students are focused on building a foundation in the understanding of basic numeracy which is built upon in later grades with a focus on geometry and algebra. There is great emphasis placed on reading comprehension, writing and analysis. Keeping Informed: Recent New London Educational News
- Dual Language Learning - New London elementary school now offers a dual language program. The program allows students to receive instruction in both English and Spanish in kindergarten through 5th grade. The program is rigorous and all students become fluent in both languages by highly trained faculty.
- Science Partnership for Innovation - The Science and Technology Magnet School in New London is participating in the Science Partnership for Innovation in Learning, hosted by the U.S Coast Guard Academy. The program allows 10th grade students to experience college science course first hand.
- Culinary Arts Competitions - At New London High School, the advanced culinary class competed in their own Iron Chef pizza challenge. The competition was judged by local restaurant owners and featured pizzas created entirely by the students.

For example, “differentiation” means that with each lesson a teacher creates, they should offer a variety of methods of understanding so that each child, no matter what their learning style, can learn in a way they can connect with. If your child is active and has trouble staying their seat, perhaps part of the lesson involves getting up out of their desk and moving around the room. For if they are musically gifted, they put a list of vocabulary words into a song. Keeping in mind, it is difficult, if not impossible to hit every learning style for every single lesson, every single day, by always changing it up, the teacher is guaranteed to hit every student most days. This makes for an exciting and engaging lesson and a love for learning.
