Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newington District Curriculum
The Common Core of Learning in all core subject areas from K – 12 are implemented into teacher lessons. All students are expected to move from the foundations of literacy and competency of reading and writing in early years, as well as mathematical problem solving. Students are also required to develop in creative and abstract reasoning and thought. These higher order thinking skills are developed by continually deepening topic-area lessons so that students are drawing upon prior knowledge to understand new knowledge.
In Science, students must have a broad knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and earth sciences, as well as advancements in technology. Social Studies bring together a great knowledge of history, governments, economics, and civics. The main focus of these standards is to build a solid foundation of learning that provide rigor and expectations that will help students succeed not only in college but in the workforce.

- Earning College Credit Now - Top achieving students at Newington High School have the chance to earn college credit from the University of Hartford. The students must qualify by earning great grades but they have the chance to earn credit tuition free.
- Ice Hockey Champions - Newington High School boy’s hockey team won their second straight state championship recently. The players all worked very hard together to achieve this difficult goal of winning not one, but two, back to back championships.
- Authors Visits - A children’s book author, who has written more than sixty children’s books, recently came to talk to students at Reynold’s Elementary School in Newington. The students had a chance to talk with him as they learned about the local author of books such as “Chickens to the Rescue.”
