Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newport District Curriculum

In Math, the standards cover numeracy, operational sense, algebra, geometry, and data analysis/statistics from elementary through high school. For example, although third grade students in mathematics are expected to learn about the properties of numbers and congruency, teachers are able to choose how they will teach this information to students. Once the basics are instilled, students are prepared to do more advanced work with algebraic equations or geometric theorems.

Teachers can modify their lessons to meet the needs of their students and still teach according to grade level expectations. The Smarter Balanced assessment will be used to test student knowledge of the Common Core State Standards thus far. Although a set reading list is not defined by the Common Core State Standards, students are encouraged to read over the summer and are given reading lists. Students are also given reading resources based on recommendations provided by the Newberry Medal Winners and the American Library Association.

Newport District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Newport School District has implemented curriculum changes to align the Common Core State Standards, which focus on Math and Language Arts, with the current curriculum. These standards do not however dictate how teachers should teach but instead lay out a progression of topic-focused learning. They also do not cover everything that students should be taught. Teachers are free to use strategies and methods that they see fitting to the needs of their students in order to meet the guidelines established by the Common Core State Standards.

We currently cover the following Newport-area school district: SAU 43 Newport School District.

Chalk Talk: Importance of Choosing the Right College

How will you decide which college to attend? While most students are focusing on just getting accepted into college, it will prove beneficial to evaluate what you actually want from your college career. There are many colleges and universities that have a reputation as social schools while others are known for their academic programs or excellent post-college job placement percentages. You first need to determine what is most important to you and what you plan to get out of college. You do not want to plan your college searched based on where your friends are interested in going; that should have little influence on your decisions. The college you do eventually choose should be a college that is a right fit for you: socially, academically and economically. College is four years of your life: If you choose the wrong one, your academic and social life might suffer as a result. If you choose the right one you’re guaranteed to have a rewarding college experience..
