Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Niskayuna District Curriculum

Niskayuna’s math curriculum focuses on teaching core mathematics concepts such as pattern recognition, measurement and spatial analysis, concrete and abstract reasoning, problems solving, and numeration. Student begin to develop a basic understanding of these concepts in the earliest grades. In the later grades, students are able to solve advanced algebraic problems using different formula and become adept at working with theorems in geometry.

Niskayuna’s English Language Arts curriculum focuses on developing students’ ability to read widely and deeply in a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. Once students develop these basic skills, they go on to apply them to areas such as research, writing, and communication. Spoken communication and listening skills are emphasized, and in class discussion about texts are a part of the learning goals for students. As they take in ideas from their peers, and from the works they read, students are also expected to learn how to incorporate others ideas into their own writing.

Chalk Talk: Last Days of the School Year

Things can get a little wild when students begin to realize that the end of the school year is fast approaching. When exhausted teacher start to get a little looser with the rules and begin to show more movies than usual, kids know that it is their time to act out. They roll their eyes a little more and put a little more effort into seeing whether or not they can push the class into chaos. Some of this is inevitable—think of it like 4:45 at the office on a Friday—but parents do need to remind kids that the old rules still apply, even if it is the end of the year. Kids who know that they need to reel it in a little help teachers get through the day, and the also make life easier for their parents. After all, a kid who develops a taste for breaking rules in class will surely bring that behavior home.
