Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Haven District Curriculum

Beginning in sixth grade/middle school, all students are required to read one book from a pre-selected list prior to the beginning of school. Those required summer readings continue throughout the remainder of the students’ academic career in the North Haven School District. Middle school students are expected to practice math skills over the summer and are given specific websites to review. In addition, based on a student’s test scores and examination results, students may be recommended for accelerated math starting in middle school.

At the high school level, students are required to complete summer assignments in both English and Mathematics. Students are offered a variety of courses at varying levels including Advanced Placement (AP) classes and a Creative Learning Program for gifted and talented students. The Connecticut Assessment System utilizes the Smarter Balanced assessment and the CMT/CAPT Science assessment at various grade levels to measure students on their skills and knowledge.

Chalk Talk: Test Taking Tips

Test taking can cause anxiety and anxiousness for many students who simply fear taking assessments and quizzes. However there are strategies that you can employ to help make test taking less stressful. First, take the time to review and study the information that will be on the test. Do not wait until the last minute to cram information; rather take time daily to review information and key terms. Before taking a test, make sure that you have a proper breakfast or lunch so that you can focus on the assessment not your appetite! While taking the test, make sure you read the directions and ask questions if you do not fully understand what you are being asked to do. Read the questions entirely and circle important works or terms that seem important. Read all answer choices fully and eliminate answers that you know are not correct. Finally choose the best answer choice and don’t second-guess yourself. Usually the first choice or your gut instinct is the correct one!
