Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Smithfield District Curriculum

The English Language Arts framework is based on student learning in reading, writing, speaking, listening, media studies, and research. Many of the skills within these areas interconnect so they are generally taught in conjunction with each other. Writing is taught with a process-oriented approach where students begin by outlining and brainstorming, then write, revise and edit before providing a final presentation of their work. Also, the use of technology to enhance written work and presentations is taught.

The Math curriculum begins with numeracy and develops skills in algebra, geometry, statistics and helps prepare students for the more advanced topics of trigonometry and calculus. The early learning in pattern recognition or the ability to manipulate shapes and spatial concepts prepares students to work with advanced concepts in algebra and geometry in high school. The math curriculum also requires that students are able to use reasoning, communicate their math thinking and can problem-solve with precision.
