Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Northwest Harborcreek District Curriculum

Elementary students at Harbor Creek School District not only learn basic core standards, they also learn Spanish from the first grade, art and music, family and consumer science, handwriting, technology and many other things. Junior high and high school students, besides showing proficiency on core subjects and completing a senior project, must also fulfill required courses in order to graduate.

The course requirements include English and composition classes and students are required to write for many purposes including business proposals, newspaper articles, and research papers. Upon graduation, students are expected to be able to write across genres and audiences with little to no grammar or punctuation mistakes. Students also must be proficient in all aspects of math, science, and social studies. Students in secondary school may elect to continue studying Spanish, or they may switch to learning French as another option.

Chalk Talk: How Students Can Memorize Information

Mnemonics are very helpful for auditory learners and can be adapted to visual learners as well. There are some other fantastic memorization methods that can be extremely effective for tactile learners as well. If you must learn a process, you may want to draw it out in some type of order or graph. Be sure to use lots of colors and detail in your drawing as you outline what is going on in the process you are describing. The drawing doesn’t need to be sophisticated, but it should get the message across to you. You may also add clues from one piece of information to another to help connect them in your brain. Students may use Venn Diagrams to help them remember things as well or other visual methods of presenting information such as graphs, pie charts, and others. Pyramid schemes can be helpful as well. These can be combined with Word Mnemonics to make the memorization even easier.
