Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norwich District Curriculum

Norwich has an increasingly diverse population with a large percentage of students whose primary language is not English. Norwich Public Schools have a transitional bilingual program aimed at meeting the needs of these students by developing their English skills alongside their native language. Though all instruction occurs in English, there is a support system to help their transition in learning English while continuing their education.

In all areas of curriculum, the district seeks to increase the rigor in all areas of instruction to meet the demands of an increasingly technological world economy and give their students the necessary skills to meet them whether it is in college or the workforce. The district participates in professional development of its teachers in the form of workshops at both the school and district wide level to give their teachers the best practices to meet these needs. The school district’s students all take the summative assessments including the Connecticut Mastery Test and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. These tests allow the state and district to monitor the progress of their students and allow them to make changes as needed.

Chalk Talk: Testing Tips

Whether it's the SAT's or credit earning AP (Advanced Placement) exams, students find that hard work does indeed pay off. These, and other college readiness tests, require many months of preparation to not just pass but do well on. Few students can walk into one of these examinations and do well without a lot of preparation. Preparing means studying hard in your classes so that you have a broad knowledge base. It also means learning test taking strategies and tips to simply know how to take these exams. In the end, hard work will pay off with higher test scores and better success in college.
