Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norwood District Curriculum
In social studies, Norwood high school students take part in an in-depth study of American government. One primary focus of the government curriculum is civic involvement. Students study current and former political parties and platforms and develop an understanding of the processes in which citizens can influence party platforms. The role of civic participation is also explored, with students gaining insight into how the public can be engaged in civic affairs.
The physical education curriculum focuses on several primary areas. Standard one focuses learning on motor skills and movement patterns associated with common physical activities such as running and playing sports. Standard two seeks to improve students’ understanding of the concepts and strategies related to learning physically based skills and demonstrating their mastery through physical activity. Standard three revolves around encouraging children to see the value in physical activity, from its involvement in reducing stress and increasing healthfulness.

Chalk Talk: Three Good Reasons to Involve Your Child in Sports
The value of athletics can sometime get lost in the frenzy for kids to have as much time as possible dedicated to their studies. Yet, participation in sports can actually improve your child’s ability to succeed in the classroom. Sports are a great way to teach goal setting and perseverance towards attaining those goals. Taking part in athletics also requires children to develop excellent time management skills, given that sports practices and games take up a lot of time. Sports also provide kids a unique opportunity to deal with adversity in a positive manner and work well with others. Each of these on-field skills can be utilized to resolve problems, be efficient with time, and make and achieve goals related to academic studies.
