Oak Park District and Curriculum

The Oak Park districts conform to the Illinois Core Curriculum educational standards. The school’s goal is to provide all students a superior education so that they may achieve their full human potential, regardless of the way that they learn. To achieve the curricular mission, the school strives to value and promote educational excellence for its own worth by providing a broad range of educational opportunities in order to promote the potential in all students to learn and to foster a life-long love of learning in students.

We currently cover the following Oak Park-area school district: Oak Park Elementary School District 97 and Oak Park and River Forest High School.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oak Park District Curriculum

By high school, students take required courses in Algebra, Geometry, and electives in Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Introduction to Computer Science, and Integrated Math in addition to AP Math courses for those who qualify. In both Algebra and Geometry, students in High School should be able to apply what they are learning to real life situations and business concepts. In Language Arts, there are literature and writing courses but the two skills are taught in an integrated fashion in all classes and the expectation is that students will be able to respond critically and analytically to what they read.

The school also believes in promoting a sense of community and good citizenship in students as well as equity and fairness and an appreciation of diversity. The school sees itself as a communicator of these common values to students in a partnership between the student, family, school, and community. This partnership is furthered by encouraging participation in all school activities and functions by students and teachers as well as parents.

Chalk Talk: EDII: The Facts

An Early Decision (ED) application is a binding college application. Basically, the student signs a contract which states that if s/he is accepted by this particular college, then s/he will attend. ED applications carry several benefits. Because they are early applications, the applicant is competing against a smaller pool of students. Also, these applications demonstrate a lot of interest in the college, which is attractive to them. But what happens if the student is rejected or wait listed? In that instance, the contract is void and the student is free to apply elsewhere and accept any offers of admittance. EDII applications are ED applications that have a later deadline than regular ED applications. These can be very beneficial to a student because it allows the applicant to go ahead and apply to his/her first choice college, and if s/he isn’t accepted, s/he can go ahead and apply to a second school but still get the benefits of an Early Decision application.
