Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Old Orchard Beach District Curriculum

In Language Arts and Literacy, students learn the basics of letter sounds and recognition, as well as listening skills. Students in kindergarten listen to stories read aloud and answer questions to demonstrate their comprehension. Throughout grade school, students build more and more complex literacy skills. Students read non-fiction and learn how to recognize the functions of different text features and how authors write for varying purposes. They are also able to recognize the point of view and literary devices found within different texts.

In Science, students in elementary school are introduced to various concepts in earth, physical, and biological science and are taught the processes for scientific investigation. They learn how to formulate hypotheses, make and document observations, and communicate their ideas. Scientific and technical literacy are important features of the curriculum and students are expected to be able to read scientific texts and write thorough lab reports.

Chalk Talk: How to Get Homework Help

If your children are having a problem with completing homework because they do not understand it there are things you can do to help. Most schools have a website where students can go to get help with their homework. Also, many schools are now offering the 21st Century program, which is an afterschool program where students can get homework help from teachers. Oftentimes, one of the challenges which students have with homework is understanding what the assignment asks them to do, so being able to discuss the assignment requirements with the teacher can be a big help. Another alternative is to find a good tutoring program for your child. Most tutors will come to your home or arrange to meet at a local library to help your child. Homework can be fun if you just do your research. Help is out there.
