Oneida District and Curriculum

The Oneida City School District is committed to creating an academic environment that offers a top learning experience for the students in the district. The goals of the district are to provide students with the skills to achieve academic excellence, foster both personal and community responsibility and offer a variety of stimulating extracurricular activities. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oneida District Curriculum

The schools in the Oneida City School District follow the precepts of the Common Core Curriculum as set out by the New York State Board of Regents. Students are encouraged to develop independent learning skills, communication skills both verbal and written, use technology, have critical analysis abilities, be able to identify and evaluate information, and conduct research.

In English and Language Arts, students will learn to read, write, listen and speak with correct English. Reading will include both informational types of text in addition to a variety of forms of literature. In Mathematics, students have intense learning experience with topics like computation, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics in a progressively more complex program. Students are expected to be mathematically literate by the time they graduate high school.

Keeping Informed: Recent Oneida Educational News

  • Mended Hearts Program - Teachers at the Oneida High School and the Otto Shortell Middle School recently participated in the Mended Hearts Program. A Dress Down Day fundraiser was held with all proceeds going to the Mended Hearts Inc. organization which is a network of individuals who have survived heart disease. Donations for the fundraising event were $250 which was presented to the organization’s President Robert E. Burns.
  • Student Art Show - Students in art classes from both the Otto Shortell Middle School and the Oneida High School recently visited the annual Central New York Scholastic Art Show which displayed the winning entries to the Central New York Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. The event was held at the Onondaga Community College.
  • Food Pantry Benefit - The Student Council from Oneida High School recently participated in a fundraiser including a food and can drive to benefit the local St. Patrick’s Food Pantry. The school organization was in charge of collecting more than 950 cans and non perishable items to donate to the food pantry. Classes that donated the most items were provided with a breakfast party.

The Institute’s educational website is focused on providing information on the science and beauty of space. Students can learn about the great discoveries that have been made using the Hubble Space Telescope. There is a guide to the night sky, students can see the most recent pictures from the Hubble telescope and watch videos on the latest news in astronomy.
