Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ostego District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum in Otsego seeks to provide students with opportunities to develop the skills required for effectively reading informational texts. Learners analyze passages to determine precisely what the author is saying. Utilizing specific examples from their readings, students justify their determinations of the author’s intent. Idea development is also emphasized. Learners acquire the ability to identify a text’s central idea, and note how that idea is supported throughout the reading and how it develops.

A large part of Otsego’s high school arts curriculum is learning how to respond to and critique art. Students examine a wide variety of music, noting the similarities and differences between genres. In theatre, learners participate in critiques of actor performances. These critiques include suggestions for improved stage presence and interactions with the audience. In the visual arts, students identify characteristics of artistic works that engage viewers in the strongest manner. Learners explore how to make their art more meaningful through adherence to common themes and topics that cross genres and cultures.

Chalk Talk: Choosing the Right Tutor

Struggling students can benefit greatly from having a private tutor. But selecting the tutor that is right for your child and his or her needs involves much more than picking a name off a website. Tutors should be able to demonstrate expertise in the area in which your child needs assistance. For example, while a tutor that has a background in math might have an excellent understanding of social studies, it’s prudent to find a tutor that specializes in social studies if that’s the area in which your child struggles. Content knowledge is key. Another key is to select a tutor whose personality is a good fit with your child. Tutors should be warm and compassionate, yet able to direct your child’s attention and challenge them to work hard and achieve their goals.
