Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pampa District Curriculum

The study of the environment is included in the science curriculum at Pampa Schools. Students begin by looking at the natural world around them and discovering the different cycles involved in each item. Plants use photosynthesis to create their food, animals have a life cycle, they even discover that rocks have their own cycles. The students then explore each section of each cycle. By the time they graduate from Pampa Schools they will have discovered how each part of nature is a part of other areas.

The mathematics curriculum at Pampas Schools help students becomes comfortable with numbers and their uses in equations. To begin, students learn how to apply numbers to items within a set. Soon, they learn to use this knowledge to add, subtract, multiply and divide. They also build on these skills to become comfortable with the use of money, including making change. They learn about how math skills apply to financial and business matters, and have a range of opportunities to learn about its applications.

Chalk Talk: Fifth Grade Mathematics

Students that enter fifth grade are just one step away from middle school and begin to encounter an increasing level of rigor in all their coursework. Curriculums vary from state-to-state, but overall, students in fifth grade learn these skills. In this grade students are more familiar with mathematical words and they are able to check the work of classmates. These students are also able to find an equivalents for fractions that are given to them. They also are able to know the order of operations in an equation. Plus they are also able to understand and identify triangles by looking at their characteristics. These plus other skills will be taught this year. By becoming aware of what a student is learning, parents will be able to know what areas they may need to brush up on.
