Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pembroke District Curriculum
Key skills in Language Arts that students are expected to master cover a range of reading, writing, and communication strategies. In reading, students are taught how to understand new language using context clues, recognize point of view, be analytical and critical, and recognize literary devices used to enhance the meaning of a text. In writing, the goal is for students to be able to write in a variety of different styles, to be able to organize their thoughts, and to be able to incorporate the thoughts of others into their work.
The assessments taken to demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of the curriculum includes the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) and the STAR Assessment. There is also the Smarter Balanced Assessment. The Smarter Balanced Assessment tests skills in mathematics and English language arts. The STAR assessment covers early literacy, reading and mathematics in the state of New Hampshire. Likewise, the NECAP tests writing, reading and mathematics.

Chalk Talk: Going to School Out of State
While the rest of your friends may be driving distance from home during their college years, if you plan to go to school out of state then you may feel that you’re in the minority. Many students decide to attend state schools because in state fees are less expensive. However, in order to attract top students from around the country, many institutions offer very competitive grants and scholarship opportunities to out of state students. Hence, instead of limiting your college choices to in state schools because of fear of the expense of out of state schools, consider applying out of state anyway. You may be surprised to find that the out of state college is even more affordable than an in state college. Since many of these scholarships and grants are internal, you may not know they exist until after you have been awarded one.
