Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pennsville Township District Curriculum

The curricula developed by the Pennsville School District are molded by the recommendations of the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The former outlines what students should learn and know at each grade level in math and language arts classes. Both frameworks provide benchmarks for student learning in the core subject areas.

The Common Core State Standards define the knowledge and skills students should acquire as part of their math studies from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. The elementary school curriculum provides learning opportunities for students that focus on acquiring basic math skills, such as the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The middle school curriculum builds on this foundation to focus student learning on fractions, ratios, and basic geometric principles such as the Pythagorean theorem. In high school, students acquire advanced understanding of mathematical concepts.

Chalk Talk: Great Reasons to Volunteer

Service learning is becoming an increasingly popular component of public school education, especially at the high school level. Students who participate in service projects can garner many benefits from their work. Research shows that providing a service for someone else raises self-esteem, boosts self-confidence and reduces stress. For students, volunteerism provides great on-the-job training and work experience that might not otherwise be available. It also looks great on job and college applications. Getting involved in volunteer activities also encourages civic responsibility. People who volunteer at a young age continue to volunteer throughout their lifetimes and feel a greater sense of community.
