Chalk Talk: Private vs. Public Colleges
The primary difference between private and public colleges is the way they’re funded. Public institutions are funded by the state, whereas private colleges tend to be funded by tuition. Because of this, each type of institution accepts students in different ways. Public colleges are mandated that they must accept a certain number of in-state residents. They tend to receive a high volume of applicants, and often are short staffed. Therefore, they tend to read applications quickly and have higher acceptance rates. Public universities tend to focus on GPA and standardized test scores to determine admissions eligibility. Private colleges tend to be more holistic in their approach to admissions. They also tend to treat students more like customers and thereby attempt to make them happy by focusing on the student experience.
