Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Peterborough District Curriculum

Students are expected to demonstrate effective communication skills. Students write analytical essays. They read a variety of challenging texts across the curriculum for meaning and author intent. They gather evidence from their reading, develop theses, and use the evidence to support their ideas. They also make oral presentations and are expected to be active and thoughtful listeners, as well. Students communicate in a variety of ways and mediums and are expected to become able to communicate effectively through all forms.

Students are also expected to demonstrate effective problem solving skills. In science classes, they learn the scientific method which promotes thoughtful investigation of problems. They begin with a study of the physical world and investigate the world around them, culminating in more complex engineering problems. Students are expected to use the knowledge they have gained effectively.

Keeping Informed: Recent Peterborough Educational News

  • Mentor Program - The ConVal Mentor Program is an important part of developing a strong set of instructors across the district. Each new teacher is assigned a mentor who guides them through the ins and outs of the district and also benefits from the new ideas of new community members.
  • Library & Technology Services - Students have a broad array of library and technology resources that they can use for research and independent projects. Staff are able to help students learn how to navigate these resources, which is a great opportunity for students to prepare for college academics and learn about different presentation technologies.
  • Upcoming Events - In order to help students and families plan for upcoming events, special program opportunities, test dates, college visits, and provide resources to help students connect with work and learning opportunities, the district has set up a page where families can keep current with what is going on.

Chalk Talk: Private vs. Public Colleges

The primary difference between private and public colleges is the way they’re funded. Public institutions are funded by the state, whereas private colleges tend to be funded by tuition. Because of this, each type of institution accepts students in different ways. Public colleges are mandated that they must accept a certain number of in-state residents. They tend to receive a high volume of applicants, and often are short staffed. Therefore, they tend to read applications quickly and have higher acceptance rates. Public universities tend to focus on GPA and standardized test scores to determine admissions eligibility. Private colleges tend to be more holistic in their approach to admissions. They also tend to treat students more like customers and thereby attempt to make them happy by focusing on the student experience.
