Pewaukee District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Pewaukee School District (PSD) serves approximately 2,800 students from 4K to grade 12. The PSD curricular program follows the Wisconsin Department of Instruction’s (DPI) standards for instruction and learning. The K-12 curriculum is designed to meet children’s developmental needs for each grade level, while building upon previous learning. In alignment with the DPI, Pewaukee schools attempt to get students ready for career and college. To prepare students further, the district has implemented a new STEM curriculum, put into practice a new physical education and health program, and applied the Columbia Teachers College Reading and Writing Project for K4-8 English language arts.

We currently cover the following Pewaukee-area school district: Pewaukee School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pewaukee District Curriculum

The elementary grades are split into two buildings; Pewaukee Lake houses 4K-3 and Horizon houses grades 4-6. The primary curriculum consists of English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, physical education, general music, and Spanish. Fifth and sixth grade students have access to choir and/or band, and sixth grade students can take courses in technology education, health, and art.

The middle and high school curricula expand upon the elementary, offering more electives while increasing the rigor of core academics. Students in the middle school have access to art, computers, family consumer education, finance, music, physical education, study skills, technology education, and world languages, among core courses. Pewaukee High School (PHS) students have access to the same categories of courses as the middle school curriculum, but their selection extends to more options under each, as well as Advanced Placement courses.

Chalk Talk: How to Write Effective Arguments

Persuasion is essential to the survival of ideas. The ability to argue clearly and factually is necessary, whether persuading an audience via a speech, letter, or essay. Before any writing can occur, it is critical to brainstorm and organize. A person should start by creating either a chart, list, or map to put ideas of support around a central claim. To reason effectively, one must first identity the thesis, or main argument. The thesis should be an opinion of which evidence can be applied to prove its merit. Once a person conveys the main argument, he or she should identify at least three facts that support it. The author should state those points early in the speech, letter, or essay. In the body of the writing, the author should reveal each piece of evidence, citing credible sources. He or she should then explain why each piece of evidence supports his or her main argument. It is important to end each point with a concluding statement. Last, complete the speech, letter, or essay by restating the thesis and each piece of evidence used to support it.
