Chalk Talk: Why Mentoring Programs Are Necessary

Many public school districts have implemented mentoring programs in order to promote a better school climate and improve student achievement. These programs are effective for a variety of reasons. Mentoring programs connect students with one another. Younger students learn from older students and develop an understanding of the knowledge, skills, and practices that will make them better students. These social connections also improve the school environment, with a reduced incidence of bullying and other negative behaviors. Additionally, students that have a peer mentor are far less likely to skip a class or skip the entire day of school. Research also shows that drug and alcohol problems are greatly diminished in schools that have mentoring programs. There are also great benefits for students who become mentors and develop their skills with individual outreach.
