Port Angeles District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

All curriculum used in the Port Angeles School District is written around the Washington State Standards by district-organized committees that select the best curriculum for each subject to help students achieve success.

The main goal of the elementary curriculum and teaching methods is to allow students to obtain the fundamental skills of English, math and science. In kindergarten, students work on letter identification, sounds, understanding the world around them, number identification and counting to 30. These basic skills are built on each additional
year of elementary school, until students are able to read for pleasure and information and write a well-developed paragraph. Students prepare for middle school in Math and Science by being algebra ready and having knowledge of basic scientific principles before promoting to middle school.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Angeles District Curriculum

In order to receive a diploma from this district, students must complete four years of English, three years of Math and two years of Science in high school. Courses taken in middle school do not count toward the requirements for high school graduation. Students must take Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 to graduate and every student must take freshman and sophomore English Composition. When these classes are completed, they may fulfill the rest of the English graduation requirements with electives. The only required science class is Biology, which is taken sophomore year. The second required year of science may be completed with any other physical science. Students also have many courses that can advance their technology learning and equip them to pursue advanced coursework in science, technology, and engineering. Students also have access to traditional enrichment subjects such as the Performing and Fine Arts.
