Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Townsend District Curriculum

Elementary reading and writing starts in kindergarten and follows a natural progression through the end of fifth grade. Students begin by learning letters and letter sounds and progress through reading and writing for information. Students must take science every year beginning in kindergarten and ending in tenth grade. The students begin studying and questioning the world around them in kindergarten and start content study of life and physical science in first grade.

In order to graduate from the district, students must take four years of Math, three years of English, two years of Science and pass the statewide high school exit exam. The requirements are filled through both required courses and elective courses. Some high school level courses, such as geometry can be completed in middle school, leaving more room for advanced core courses at the high school level. College bound students are urged to take four years of Science and Math math, including Calculus.

Keeping Informed: Recent Port Townsend Educational News

  • Haven - Not all students learn in traditional classrooms, and Port Townsend schools strive to support all students regardless of their learning style. This program allows students to complete a majority of their coursework at home or online with the support of a certificated teacher. The families have three choices to choose from, and may pick the one that works best for their student and family.
  • Coffee and Conversation - Open communication between school and home helps foster the success of all students. The principal of the middle school understands this phenomenon, which is why she holds an open forum for school parents. This forum is an informal way for parents to get to know the school and ask questions.
  • Java 101 - It is one thing to talk about running a business in class, it is another thing entirely to run the business. The tourism and hospitality class at the high school is taking learning by doing to the next level and has opened a coffee stand the students are responsible for running. The way the students run the coffee stand has a direct impact on their class grade.
