Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Potsdam District Curriculum

The standards on which Potsdam schools’ base math instruction seek to develop students understanding of core mathematics concepts in the earliest grades. As students advance grade-to-grade the standards require them to further develop their knowledge of these concepts in real-world application, which is an emphasis of Common Core learning.

The standards on which Potsdam schools’ base English Language Arts instruction require that students learn to read and comprehend fiction and non-fiction texts beginning in the earliest grades. The standards then use these skills as a base on which students develop other important literacy skills like word decoding, comprehension of authorial intent, textual criticism, and spoken critical thought. Social Studies instruction includes learning the geography and local history. This is accomplished by using map skills, timelines, and special field trips. Students in the district also attend Art, Music, Technology, Health and Physical Education classes.

Chalk Talk: Math Literacy Begins At Home

Getting parents to work with children on reading is easy. Getting them to work with children on math can be a different matter all together. It’s not as if lower-level math is too complicated, it’s just that there seem to be more opportunities to work on reading. Opportunities to work are math are there, parents just have to look for them. Parents earn money at work. They use that money to pay bills and to buy the things their families need. Earning money at work is multiplication and addition. Spending money is subtraction. Parents can have their children help them to keep track of the money that comes in and the money that goes it. This will give children a chance to practice their addition, multiplication, and subtraction. When children are old enough to buy things for themselves, they can also learn about saving, percentages and develop some financial literacy as well. It will also help them better understand how to spend and save money wisely.
