Pullman District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Pullman Public Schools currently use curriculum to ensure students are meeting the Washington State Standards in all core subject areas. The Common Core State Standards are based around the idea that all students will be college and career ready at high school graduation.
Students in the elementary grades follow a curriculum that allows them to build on skills from the year before in English, Mathematics and Science. All students take the whole language approach to learning reading and begin writing in kindergarten. In math, teachers use Holt curriculum to teach the Washington State Standards. Science is taught using a holistic approach in which teachers asked students to observe the world around them, creating hypothesis about natural phenomenon. Content instruction in Science begins in first grade with Earth Science and continues in subsequent grades covering the basics of Physical and Life Science.
We currently cover the following Pullman-area school district: Pullman Public School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pullman District Curriculum
In middle school, students begin to develop skills learned in elementary school. Students begin to read more for information and write complete essays. Students receive content instruction in Science covering Earth, Life and Physical science. Students are able to take Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school, if their elementary school teacher recommends it and they have acceptable test scores. This allows them more freedom of choice in their Math courses in high school.
High school students are required to take four years of English, three years of Math and two years of Science. After completing Algebra 1 and Geometry, students are able to choose a math class elective to complete their requirements. Students must take Freshman and Sophomore Composition and Biology. The rest of the requirements can be fulfilled with electives offered by the department.

Chalk Talk: What Makes a Good Tutor?
Often time, successful tutoring takes more than a person that is competent in a topic explaining said topic to a student. Many times, a student needs to be receptive and open to the tutor. A good tutor understands this and takes the time to get to know the student. This lets the student know the tutor really cares about them and so much more learning can happen when this is the case. In addition, it allows the tutor to combine ways of learning a topic with interests of the child.
