Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rice Lake District Curriculum

Rice Lake’s mathematics curriculum is built around the Common Core State Standards. In high school, math students gain an appropriate understanding of statistics and probability. Learners explore categorical and quantitative data and gain the ability to interpret both effectively. Students work with linear models, and also use probability to determine the outcome of decisions. The manner in which expected values are calculated is a primary topic of learning as well. The rules of probability are also explored, as are independent and conditional terms of probability.

The social studies curriculum introduces topics such as global warming, environmentalism, and sustainability are explored, with students identifying the ways in which various countries are attempting to address these environmental issues. The health of the global economy is a central topic as well, with students evaluating issues such as wealth distribution and inequality. Economic practices of different parts of the world are also explored, and students compare and contrast the manner in which these economies developed and thrived.

Chalk Talk: Community Service Benefits Students

Service learning projects are becoming more and more popular in public schools, particularly at the high school level. There are a variety of reasons for this, including improving the community in which the school is located. However, students reap a number of personal benefits from participation in service activities. Community service teaches young people about the value of being an active member of society. By helping others overcome obstacles, students gain an appreciation for the problems that face us today. Students also develop empathy as a result of their work to help others. Valuable skills can be gained as well, from improved communication skills to a specific skill, such as using tools to make home repairs. Whatever the case, volunteerism promotes the best in young people and helps them become valuable members of the community and helps them develop many of their unique skills that they will use throughout their lives.
