River Grove District and Curriculum

The Rhodes School District and Leyden High School District use the Illinois Learning Standards as the basis for teaching and learning in their schools. The Illinois Learning Standards provide frameworks for all academics subjects and Social Emotional Learning that is also a part of student’s learning experience. The frameworks give teachers grade level appropriate standards that students should achieve in order to be prepared for advancement in the subject. The objectives describe skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities that teachers are able to teach according to how their students will best master the topic.

We currently cover the following River Grove-area school districts: Rhodes School District 84.5 and Leyden High School District 212.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the River Grove District Curriculum

The Illinois Learning Standards curriculum uses Common Core expectations for Math and Language Arts. In each subject there are Anchor Standards which define the big picture skills that students should develop. There are also more specific grade level expectations so that students progress in a logical fashion in achieving thorough mastery of these goals. The Language Arts Anchor Standards cover critical reading, analytic writing, effective communication, research skills and media literacy.

The Mathematics Standards cover topics in Numerical Operations using base ten and fractions, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Geometry, Measurement and Data, Geometry, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Functions, and Expressions and Equations. Students are introduced to grade-level skills in all these areas during their elementary math courses, and during middle school begin to learn more deeply about algebra, geometry, and measurement and data. This progression of skill-based learning allows them to do advanced math in high school.

Chalk Talk: College Interviews

College interviews can be intimidating, but there are several key things to keep in mind that will make it less frightening. First, be prepared. Think about questions the interviewer might ask and prepare answers for them. Also, prepare your own questions based on your interests in the college, your prospective major, and other things that you couldn’t simply look up on the college’s website. Also, bear in mind that the interviewer isn’t interested in tripping a prospective student up or embarrassing anyone; the purpose of the interview is to simply have a conversation and get to know the student. Try not to be nervous. Enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity, and being personable are important characteristics they’re looking for as well.
