Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Santa Monica District Curriculum
The curriculum in Math covers numerical operations, algebraic operations, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability. In Science, student learning covers earth and environmental science, biology, chemistry, physics and technology. In English/Language Arts, the subject is designed around reading literary and informational texts, writing processes, and communication.
Other specialized programs, like small academies, have curriculum that describes the learning outcomes and the steps that bring them about. These curriculum are designed by educators and professionals to help students gain the necessary skills to be prepared for their next steps. The design of the curriculum that moves students through an educational experience which expands on prior years knowledge opens the door for higher-order critical thinking skills.
