Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sarnia District Curriculum

In Math classes, students study mathematical concepts, like algebra and geometry, to understand how and why the math works. They learn complex formulas and gain a firm understanding of mathematics which they can build upon later. They learn how to analyze quantitative data and use it to make models that will help them find answers to other questions. When students graduate, they will take these strong habits, good work ethic, and solid knowledge base with them and achieve success in life.

In English classes, students read complex, challenging texts that make them think about their own preconceptions and the preconceptions of the authors. They learn how to analyze both fiction and non-fiction. Students form opinions and use evidence gathered from the texts and other materials to support those opinions with well-reasoned arguments. They learn how to write analytically and use the proper conventions in their writing. Vocabulary acquisition is also emphasized as are verbal communication and presentation skills.

Sarnia District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students in Sarnia are taught following the framework for learning that is laid out in the Ontario Curriculum. This curriculum provides the structure by which the subject matter is organized and includes the range of skills that students must become proficient in to master the content. In addition to the general knowledge within the content areas, the Ontario Curriculum also describes the concepts that support or extend the subject. The curriculum also provides for a variety of academic and career-preparatory secondary programs. The province-wide curriculum enables all students to meet standards of learning that will prepare them for future academic and life goals.

We currently cover the following Sarnia-area school districts: Lambton Kent District School Board and St. Clair Catholic District School Board.

Chalk Talk: Fun Family Fitness Activities

No matter what the age, children enjoy activities with their families and parents like to have time, away from technology, with their children. Family can enjoy active times together easily and inexpensively. One such activity is pulling out Hula Hoops and have fun. This simple activity can burn calories while the family has fun trying different techniques. Using roller skates or blades can also be a fun way to spend some active family time. Take the equipment to a park and go. Make sure to include pads when preparing for this. Finally, if the family has a dog, try taking a family walk, or hike, with the puppy. This opens up the door for conversation while enjoying the surroundings.
