Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sarnia District Curriculum
In Math classes, students study mathematical concepts, like algebra and geometry, to understand how and why the math works. They learn complex formulas and gain a firm understanding of mathematics which they can build upon later. They learn how to analyze quantitative data and use it to make models that will help them find answers to other questions. When students graduate, they will take these strong habits, good work ethic, and solid knowledge base with them and achieve success in life.
In English classes, students read complex, challenging texts that make them think about their own preconceptions and the preconceptions of the authors. They learn how to analyze both fiction and non-fiction. Students form opinions and use evidence gathered from the texts and other materials to support those opinions with well-reasoned arguments. They learn how to write analytically and use the proper conventions in their writing. Vocabulary acquisition is also emphasized as are verbal communication and presentation skills.

- Science Education Partnership - Local elementary schools have partnered up with local scientists who support the efforts of science education. Some teachers will participate in the Adopt-A-Scientist program and bring a real scientist into the classroom to help teach students. This partnership is also providing science kits and other instructional resources to local teachers.
- Exchange Programs - The district supports the international efforts of Student Exchange Programs. These are usually a semester long period in which local students study abroad and local families host children from other countries. Family can enjoy active times together easily and inexpensively. One such activity is pulling out Hula Hoops and have fun. This simple activity can burn calories while the family has fun trying different techniques. Using roller skates or blades can also be a fun way to spend some active family time. Take the equipment to a park and go. Make sure to include pads when preparing for this. Finally, if the family has a dog, try taking a family walk, or hike, with the puppy. This opens up the door for conversation while enjoying the surroundings.
