Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sauk Rapids District Curriculum

The elementary social studies curriculum in Sauk Rapids begins with the study of geography. Students become familiar with maps, globes, and other geographic tools. The physical and human characteristics of places and regions are identified, including mountains and oceans, as well as cities and highways. Relative and absolute location words are learned as well, with students becoming proficient in providing accurate directions to a specific location. Key features of local, state, national, and global locations are learned as well.

Sauk Rapids has developed a health sciences curriculum for high school students that help them develop strong goal setting abilities. With regard to health, learners identify specific goals for their overall health and wellness and devise a plan for achieving those goals. Learners analyze case studies to get a better idea of how other people have established and reached their health-related goals as well. Students are asked to interview their relatives, including parents and grandparents, to determine what, if any, health-related concerns run in the family.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Reading

While reading may not be every child’s favorite activity, it is still a highly important activity to undertake. The more a child reads, the better the grasp they have on essential processes of reading and writing. Additionally, kids that read often have much larger vocabularies and an improved ability to communicate with others. Reading also opens the reader’s mind to other places in the world. Studies show that frequent readers demonstrate an enhanced capacity for empathy and understanding of others. Reading is also an excellent activity for children to escape the daily grind. They also gain the ability to self-reflect and develop personal insights they might not gain during a conversation or using other forms of media. In addition to the stress-relieving qualities of reading, it is a great way for kids to clear their minds, calm down, and relax.
