Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shelby District Curriculum

Physical science is a critical component of Shelby’s high school science curriculum. As part of the course, students study matter in depth. Learners examine the different properties and states of matter, developing a sense for the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous matter. Students work at the atomic level as well, analyzing models of atoms to learn their various components. The periodic table is studied, with students identifying characteristics of various elements and forming an understanding of the representative groups that comprise the periodic table.

Shelby’s English language arts curriculum prepares students to be effective readers and writers. In middle school, this involves acquiring skills that are necessary for reading literature in a proficient manner. Students learn how to determine the theme or central idea of a piece of literature, and analyze how that theme develops over the course of the text. Learners explore how various elements of literature, from setting to plot to character development, work together to form a cohesive story.

The cognitive aspect of physical activity is also emphasized. P.E. students work on understanding the psychological aspects of sports performance and using biometrics to improve their performance on the field.
