Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sherrill District Curriculum

The Science curriculum provides a framework for elementary science, intermediate science, living environment, earth science, chemistry, and physics. Learners also look at the earth’s natural resources, noting the availability of water, oil, natural gas, coal, and other necessary resources. Students gain the skills of scientific inquiry and are instructed in universal knowledge while also being able to learn through experiential, hands-on projects.

The Language Arts curriculum covers literary and informational reading, as well as writing to persuade, explain, and convey experience. The Math curriculum is laid out through subject-area integrated pathways including Algebra I and II, Geometry, and the overall processes and proficiencies that students will learn each year. Students use coordinates to prove geometric theorems algebraically, and also learn to use volume formulas to solve problems. Modeling is discussed as well, with students learning how to apply geometric concepts to models.

Sherrill District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District are benefited by a curricular framework that lays out the expectations for learning within each course and program available. The learning expectations guide instruction and testing, and serves as the basis for educational attainment and achievement. Each framework goes beyond basic subject area learning. The subjects all impart necessary thinking skills like the ability to interpret and evaluate information, reason with logic, and to communicate with multicultural awareness. It is through the proficiency gained in each subject that students are able to succeed in all these areas and in any future learning pursuit. Character education programming is a vital part of Wyoming’s mission to helping students reach their full potential.

Sherrill Area Educational News

  • College/Career Center - The College/Career Center at VVS High School offers a wide range of resources for students to use to plan for their first work experiences, summer academic and enrichment programs, to find scholarship information, and other educational opportunities. Students advantage themselves by getting to know about these resources and having a guidance professional know about their interests. This can increase the number of opportunities they are presented with which are well-suited to the individual student.
  • Media Centers - The VVS School District has developed Media Centers available to students and families in each town of the district. These centers provide resources for research, using and learning about technology, a quiet workspace and a place to check out the latest e-book. As students prepare for college, the access to library resources provides a basis for being able to conduct college-level research and writing.
  • Athletic Opportunities - Throughout the school years, Athletics is a major component of the learning which students do. Physical and kinesthetic abilities are developed, and an awareness for fitness and nutrition is gained. In High School, the experience of participation on teams also holds a great role in social learning. An impressive and noteworthy feature of the Athletics Department in the district is the public awareness they are raising about concussions, a particular concern for parents of athletes. This has become a hot topic and their focus is a real benefit to students and their families.

Chalk Talk: Swim Time

High school students often have to spend a few weeks swimming in gym class. Although it can be a pain for students, swimming is an essential fitness and lifestyle skill. Parents should be aware of what students need to pack when they must swim in gym class. Students will want to pack an appropriate swimsuit; they may want to wear their suit under their clothing to school to make changing easier. Other items include a towel, flip-flops or other swim shoes to wear when not in the pool, a cover-up, googles if necessary, a bag to put the wet swimsuit in, and shampoo to wash their hair with afterwards. Students will have to find out if they have access to blow dryers or if they have to bring their own. Girls should have a hair tie with them, as they may not have time to dry their hair completely.
