Shively District and Curriculum

Shively students are taught using the curriculum from the Kentucky Department of Education. There are many goals of the curriculum; the development of critical thinking skills and adequately preparing students for college and career are paramount. This is done through a framework, of increasing complexity, which focuses on major strands of learning in each subject area. Students also have many electives in the arts, technology, and career-related fields that combine practical and academic knowledge of the subject.

We currently cover the following Shively-area school districts: Holy Cross High School and Jefferson County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shively District Curriculum

Starting in their primary years, students are expected to meet the standards of the Core Curriculum. Children are entered into the primary program at age five and stay there until they are ready to enter grade four, during which time fundamental reading, comprehension, problem-solving and inquiry skills are instilled. These are expanded on in the later years when students read and analyze texts, problem-solve across areas of math, and conduct experiments and formulate sound hypotheses

Shively students follow the Kentucky Department program for Career and Practical Living studies. This is a program that studies the living practices of the population. The goal is to make students aware that living practices can lead to obesity or heart problems among others. There is an effort to not sacrifice good health practices for academics. At Holy Cross High School in Shively, students take part in activities such as sports, art club and theater. These activities encourage social awareness and interactions with other people.

Chalk Talk: Making Choices

When you have to make a choice between options it can be difficult. For instance, you may have to choose between colleges to attend. Or you may have to choose between courses to take or even between boys or girls to date. Discussing it with your parents and friends is a good way to proceed but they cannot decide for you. There are some simple tools to use to help you make choices. One is to take a sheet of paper and write all the pros of one choice and all the cons. Often it is surprising how this simple task can help you find the choice you should make. Every day we have choices to make. Good luck with yours!
