Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Silver City District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum is geared toward providing students with the skills they need to be proficient in both English and Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. In addition, the ELA standards for literacy are applied to other core subjects including Science, Social Studies, History and Technology courses. In ELA, students learn to read, write, listen and speak using correct and grammatically correct English. Students read both literature and informational text so that they are prepared for the different types of reading material they may encounter during college or in the workforce.

In Mathematics, students focus on a finite number of math subjects including algebra, computation, measurement, data analysis and probability, and statistics. The expectation is that by the time students’ graduate they will be fluent in both English and Mathematics. The programs are progressive in both both core subjects, with students building on their skills year by year.

Chalk Talk: Meet Me at Midnight

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has a new web site for kids called Meet Me at Midnight. The interactive web site takes kids on a magic trip of the museum where by solving mysteries and interactive games, they get to put artwork that has been all mixed up back together again. The Root Monster is the intriguing tour guide and the source of all the art mix-ups. It is a great way to interest children in museums and art work while they learn about classic art and the artists who created the work. There is a kid’s activity guide and a parent and teacher guide to the mystery tour
