Silver City District and Curriculum

The public schools in the city of Silver City, New Mexico are under the jurisdiction of the Silver Consolidated School District. The Silver City Public Schools have instituted English Language Development Standards in conjunction with the Bilingual Multicultural Education Bureau for English language learners due to the number of students within the school district for which English is a second language. These standards are used in collaboration with the Common Core Curriculum that has been approved by the State of New Mexico for use in public schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Silver City District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum is geared toward providing students with the skills they need to be proficient in both English and Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. In addition, the ELA standards for literacy are applied to other core subjects including Science, Social Studies, History and Technology courses. In ELA, students learn to read, write, listen and speak using correct and grammatically correct English. Students read both literature and informational text so that they are prepared for the different types of reading material they may encounter during college or in the workforce.

In Mathematics, students focus on a finite number of math subjects including algebra, computation, measurement, data analysis and probability, and statistics. The expectation is that by the time students’ graduate they will be fluent in both English and Mathematics. The programs are progressive in both both core subjects, with students building on their skills year by year.
