Silvis District and Curriculum

The school districts that serve students from Silvis all follow the comprehensive frameworks provided by the Illinois Learning Standards. The curriculum is intended to develop critical thinking and creative problem solving skills to help students become lifelong learners. Students are taught to accept responsibility for their actions and to positively contribute to society, while being encouraged to maintain a positive self-image that includes respecting and caring about the welfare of others. The curriculum is also intended to prepare students for the evolving changes of the 21st century.

We currently cover the following Silvis-area school districts: Carbon Cliff-Barstow School District 36, East Moline School District 37, Silvis School District 34 and United Township High School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Silvis District Curriculum

The goal of the Illinois Learning Standards is to prepare its students for productive, successful futures by insuring that they become educated, responsible citizens. The school believes that all students deserve to succeed, regardless of their backgrounds or learning needs. Faculty are given the freedom to tailor their lessons to fit the individual needs of students, whether that be to help a struggling student catch up to grade level, or to provide more challenging work for a high-performing student.

Students are given clear expectations for what they are expected to demonstrate in each grade level and in each class, and the focus of each class is in preparing students to be creative problem solvers who have gained the tools and learning they need to be competitive members of our increasingly global community. Each year, students use some of what they learned in past years to master new and more complex topics. This allows them to both reflect and analyze, which is a key to the development of strong critical thinking skills.

Chalk Talk: Components of a College Application

Each piece of a college application serves a different function and provides different information. The application itself mostly only provides biographical information, though the essay/s can be very useful. The essay/s can provide insight into the student’s goals and passions. One of the most important elements a college is looking for is what the student is passionate about—or, really, the fact that the student is passionate about something. The transcript is really the most important part for most colleges. It includes the course list and the grade point average. This, along with the school profile, can help the college decide how ready the student is for college-level work. Standardized test scores do this same work for colleges that accept them.
