Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sioux Falls District Curriculum
Following the core curriculum of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, the district of Sioux Falls is compliant in the No Child Left Behind Act. The Sioux Falls School District’s elementary mathematics curriculum follows the standards of South Dakota. These mathematics standards are the benchmarks of what the children should master, such as number sense, dimension and measuring, geometry, algebraic problem solving, and statistics, along with probability.
The Reading and Language Arts standards include, in the elementary grades, concepts and skills such as the use of spoken language, word study, reading independently, independent writing, and small group reading and writing instruction. Students learn strategies to make meaning from the texts they read. The reading includes texts in all subject area so that students may apply their literacy skills in all courses. Creativity, means of expression, and the development of voice are all facets of the Language Arts curriculum.

Named after a famous humanitarian who voiced against hunger in the world, the Sioux Falls District committee unanimously agreed to name the middle school in his honor.
